The Certified Financial Peer Mentor (CFPM) was designed to provide training for students in higher education working with their peers in a one-on-one setting. This comprehensive program was designed to allow mentors to assist other students with establishing personal budgets, understanding and managing financial aid, and developing a plan of action to help them through school and after graduation.
Certification ensures that individuals have been trained and tested in counseling skills, the fundamentals of personal finance, and financial aid. Having your CFPM designation will set you apart from other students and demonstrate that you have both the training and necessary tools to guide your peers through financial situations.
Course Outline:
Part I of the training manual details communication and counseling techniques. Communication techniques include listening skills, obstacles to effective communications, improving communication skills and counseling formats. Cognitive issues and problem solving skills are also addressed, as are learning styles and emotional issues regarding money.
Part II details the fundamentals of financial management.
Part III discusses the fundamentals of financial aid, the FAFSA and student loans.
Part IV of the training manual is the Resource Guide which includes worksheets, a glossary of relevant terms, forms, website information, and the Code of Ethics.
